Insurance and Financial Services Enterprise Reporting Assessment
and Implementation
The insurance and financial services
company is a Fortune 500 company that manages approximately
eight major insurance and financial services companies across
the United States. After this company invested hundreds
of thousands of dollars trying to implement JD Edwards Report
Writer and later another BI solution, they made the painful
decision that these solutions would not meet their enterprise
needs. They asked PSC to complete an Enterprise Reporting
assessment and Proof of Concept to help them select the
right package for their needs.
The assessment focused on analyzing
requirements and completing a Proof of Concept that would
help them select the best enterprise reporting solution
to meet the critical and complex reporting requirements
around their JD Edwards Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
system. The packages that was selected were Business Objects and Crystal Enterprise
and Crystal Reports. The key requirements that led to the
selection of Crystal Decisions include the following:
Drill-down the customer
had the need to support three levels of drill-downs.
Reusable reports the customer
wanted to reuse common reports across multiple business
units. Crystal allowed the use of reusable, parameter-driven
reports so that "one" report, like an income statement,
could be used consistently across business by entering the
business unit parameter (company x, or consolidated parameters).
Scheduled reports the customer
needed reports to be scheduled to run at night and then
delivered via a web portal during the day. This would minimize
the reporting impact to the JD Edwards systems performance
during the day. Many reports were financial reports that
needed to be run on a schedule - daily, weekly, monthly,
quarterly, and annually.
Row level security the
customer needed reports that could be delivered via the
web in a secure fashion. They wanted to run one report and
enable users to only see sections of the report that they
were authorized to see. This enabled the customer to generate
fewer reports and to control access by user or by user group.
Presentation Quality Reports
the customer wanted a solution that would provide the best
presentation quality for delivery via the web or via a printer.
Most of these reports were financial reports and they needed
to look the same whether the user was looking at the web
report, a printed report, or a report that was downloaded
into Excel. Crystal has lead the way in delivering consistent,
high quality reports that look great in all these different
formats.
Ease of use the customer
wanted a solution that would be easy to use for their users
and easy to create reports for their developers. Ease of
use has been Crystal?s key competitive advantage for years.
Crystal was the clear fit here.
Business User Analysis– business users had the need to get access to information easily without having to understand the complexities of JDE tables and data. Business Objects provided a perfect platform to create a meta-data layer or a business view of the complex data. The meta-data layer created an easy to use environment for the business users to analyze “information” while being insulated from the complexities of the data
After the assessment and proof
of concept, the company selected PSC to help them deliver
their Enterprise Reporting project. PSC helped the customer
put together a plan to consolidate over 200 reports into
80 interactive reports and deliver them via a secured web
portal. PSC was selected to install, configure, mentor,
and train their staff and help them deliver the enterprise
solution. PSC provided a team to develop these reports to
meet the customers 3-month window to put these reports
into production.

State Government Enterprise Reporting Assessment and Implementation
PSC completed an assessment for
a large state government division to help define an enterprise
strategy to securely deliver web-enabled reports across
its enterprise. The assessment focused on analyzing the
current environment and the future requirements of the "to
be" enterprise reporting system. The "to be"
requirements included those for the three mission-critical
systems and for numerous additional systems that the division
plans on implementing. We helped the client define their
needs and select the right package. The solution defined
how over 400 reports could be consolidated into 80 interactive
reports and delivered securely over the web. The solution
recommendation outlined the benefits, the Return on Investment
(ROI), the implementation architecture, and the implementation
plan. The ROI outlined a 6-month payback and an anticipated
savings in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. PSC was
selected to manage and deliver the enterprise implementation.
The state government division
praised the project as one of its most successful projects.
All team members have been very happy with the results.
Team members included end users, business staff, business
managers, technical managers, and technical staff members.

Supply Chain and Integrated Logistics Enterprise Reporting
Assessment and Implementation
A Fortune 100 food company decided to put into place new transportation, logistics, and warehouse management systems. This decision, in turn, created a requirement for information sharing throughout the company in a manner spanning numerous functional divisions, business applications, and databases. Crystal Enterprise and Crystal Reports became the food company?s selection to enable web delivery of critical information to the business areas.
PSC and Crystal Decisions, both
contracted by the company, worked together on the project
to assess the enterprise reporting requirements and to define
critical success factors. A key factor in this was to ascertain
that the Crystal software architecture met the clients
requirements.
The projects initial phase
zeroed in on requirements definition, business needs analysis,
software architecture design, and creation of a high-level
implementation plan. The projects subsequent phase
focused on configuration and installation of new production,
application, and test environments for high availability
and fail-over. PSC customized and integrated the tools for
the environment.
PSCs project role also
included consulting and mentoring to ensure that the system
became smoothly operational. PSC made sure that knowledge
transfer took place to the key customer operations staff
who then became responsible for maintaining the new system.

Hospital System Enterprise Reporting Assessment and Implementation
PSC completed an Enterprise Reporting and business intelligence assessment for a large hospital
system. The hospital has over 600 licensed medical/surgical
beds and operates over 300 clinics and healthcare centers.
The assessment focused on analyzing
the current environment and the future requirements of the
to be enterprise reporting system. The to
be requirements included key requirements for its
mission-critical Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system
and hospital system. Other key requirements were the ability
to address privacy and security issues with this technology.
We helped the client define its needs and select the right
package. The solution defined how over 300 reports could
be consolidated into 150 interactive reports and delivered
securely over the web. The solution recommendation outlined
the benefits, the business case (ROI), the implementation
architecture, and the implementation plan. The ROI outlined
a 6-month payback and an anticipated savings in the hundreds
of thousands of dollars. PSC was selected to install, configure,
mentor, and train its staff and help deliver the enterprise
solution and project.
Retail Call Center Web Reporting Solution
PSC was selected to help a large
retail call center define key metrics to manage its call
center operations and to implement a web reporting solution
to monitor and manage those key metrics within its business.
The customer selected PSC to install and configure Crystal
Reports and Crystal Enterprise to support its reporting
needs.
Services
Company ERP Enterprise Reporting Project
PSC team members were selected
by a services company to develop and deliver Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) reports. The ERP system was called
BEST and the database used for reporting was a Microsoft
SQL server database and DataMart.
Application Performance Assessment
PSC was selected by a Fortune
100 company to assess the performance of a number of mission
critical reports that were put into production and were
experiencing performance problems.
The PSC team completed an assessment
of the current reporting applications and the code that
was used to deliver the reports. The team found that the
reports were designed and developed adequately, but that
the SQL statements and the stored procedures used to create
the reports were extremely inefficient. The PSC team put
together a short-term and long-term plan to prioritize the
optimization of these reports. Mission critical reports
were addressed in the first phase and the other reports
were addressed in later phases. By optimizing the stored
procedures, the PSC team was able to improve the performance
of the reports by over 70 percent on average. The performance
improvement led to improved reporting systems performance,
improved applications performance, and improved network
performance.
SAP ERP Enterprise Reporting Assessment
PSC completed an assessment for
a large company to help define an enterprise strategy to
securely deliver web-enabled reports out of its SAP Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) System. The assessment focused on
analyzing the current environment and the future requirements
of the "to be" enterprise reporting system. The
"to be" requirements included the need for user-enabled
report creation, the support for reporting across multiple
SAP modules, and the ability to schedule web-based reports
at night. Scheduling would allow the customer to offload
reporting and querying from their critical applications
and database systems. The Return on Investment (ROI) and
business case that was outlined included a 6-month payback
and a savings of over $500,000 in report development and
maintenance costs. The key tools that were recommended were
Crystal Reports and Crystal Enterprise. Crystal has a very
strategic partnership with SAP to deliver reports around
the SAP environment. We outlined an average cost savings
of 50 percent to develop reports using Crystal Reports versus
using ABAP and the SAP reporting tools. A majority of the
business case was focused squarely on savings associated
with development and maintenance time.
SAP Enterprise Reporting Proof of Concept
PSC completed an Proof of Concept
for a large company to help define a
reporting solution that would enable their team to deliver
reports via the
web in a much faster way. The key system was an SAP Enterprise
Resource
Planning (ERP) system and the company had purchased many
of the ERP modules.
PSC proved that Crystal Reports and Crystal Enterprise could
deliver reports
from SAP R/3, and we provided a roadmap for implementing
ad-hoc reporting.
PSC was able to deliver reports in a week that this customer
had not been
able to get out of their systems in years.
